FAM Trip Diaries: Budapest

In April 2026, Visit Hungary welcomed a select group of UK travel trade representatives on a four-day familiarisation trip designed to showcase the cultural richness of Budapest alongside the charm of Hungary’s surrounding countryside. Hosted by Amy Watts of Black Diamond Agency, the itinerary provided a well-rounded introduction to the destination, blending iconic landmarks, immersive cultural experiences and hotel site inspections with authentic local dining and Danube-side experiences.

Throughout the trip, attendees explored both sides of the Hungarian capital, from the grand boulevards and architectural treasures of Pest to the historic castle district of Buda, while also discovering a more traditional side of the country through a countryside excursion beyond the city. A carefully curated programme of guided tours, gastronomy, wellness experiences and accommodation visits highlighted the diversity of product available for the UK market, supporting future itinerary planning and product development opportunities.

From rooftop dining overlooking the city skyline to river cruises on the Danube and traditional equestrian heritage experiences, the FAM offered valuable insight into why Budapest continues to grow in appeal as both a city-break destination and a wider touring gateway into Hungary.

Top Tips For Crafting An Unforgettable Budapest Itinerary

From exploring both sides of the Danube to planning ahead for key attractions, experiencing Budapest after dark, sampling traditional Hungarian cuisine and venturing into the surrounding countryside, these practical insights will help you design a well-balanced, experience-rich itinerary that captures the full depth of Budapest and its wider region for your clients.

Buda Castle and the Royal Palace on the Danube, Hungary

Exploring Both Sides of Budapest

Budapest is split into two sides by the Danube, and it is definitely worth exploring both to get the full experience. Buda is the quieter, more historic side, with beautiful spots like Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church, plus amazing views over the city. It is perfect for a slower pace and soaking up the scenery. On the other side, Pest is where all the buzz is, think Parliament, St. Stephen’s Basilica, ruin bars, restaurants and shops. It is lively, fun and full of energy, especially in the evenings. Spending time in both really gives you the best of Budapest.

Planning Ahead for Key Attractions in Budapest

It is a good idea to book popular attractions in advance, especially for must-see spots like Parliament tours and the Széchenyi Baths, as these can sell out quickly, particularly during weekends and peak travel seasons. Booking ahead not only guarantees your preferred time slot but also helps you avoid long queues on the day. For Parliament, guided tours are limited and run at set times, so securing tickets early is key. Similarly, Széchenyi Baths can get very busy, so pre-booking entry (and even extras like cabins or spa treatments) will make your visit much smoother and more enjoyable.

Budapest After Dark: Riverfront Magic & Illuminated Landmarks

Budapest truly comes alive after dark, with the city beautifully illuminated and even more atmospheric in the evening. Landmarks such as the Parliament Building, Chain Bridge and Buda Castle are all lit up, creating stunning reflections across the Danube and some incredible photo opportunities. The warm glow of the lights highlights the architecture and gives the city a romantic, almost magical feel. Taking an evening stroll along the river, crossing the bridge, or even enjoying a Danube river cruise at sunset or night is one of the best ways to take it all in and see Budapest at its most impressive.

A Taste of Budapest: Must-Try Local Dishes

When visiting Budapest, be sure to try some of Hungary’s most iconic dishes. Goulash is a must, a rich, hearty soup made with beef, paprika and vegetables, perfect for getting a real taste of traditional Hungarian cuisine. For something sweet, chimney cake is a popular street food, freshly baked over an open flame and coated in sugar, cinnamon or nuts, best enjoyed warm as you explore the city. And for a savoury treat, lángos is a local favourite: deep-fried dough topped with sour cream, cheese, and sometimes garlic or ham. These dishes are widely available across markets, restaurants and street stalls, making them easy (and delicious) to tick off during your trip.

Exploring Szentendre, Hungary

Day Trips from Budapest: Exploring Beyond the Capital

If you have a little extra time, it is well worth taking a day trip outside of Budapest to see a different side of Hungary. Szentendre, just a short journey from the city, is a charming riverside town known for its colourful streets, art galleries and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a half-day escape. Eger offers a mix of history and wine culture, with its beautiful castle, baroque architecture and the famous “Bull’s Blood” wine region. For something more laid-back, Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest lake, is ideal for scenic views, lakeside walks and a slower pace, especially in the warmer months. Each destination provides a unique contrast to Budapest, adding depth and variety to your trip.
