When to Visit
Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.
January
Winter is cool and quiet, with highs around 6–8°C. Sea breezes make the waterfront brisk, but clear days offer wide views across Burgas Bay. It’s a peaceful time for walking in the Sea Garden, visiting museums, or birdwatching around Lake Atanasovsko, where wintering species gather.
February
Still chilly, with highs of 7–9°C. The coastline remains calm and largely crowd-free. Migratory birds begin appearing in the wetlands, while cafés and cultural venues provide shelter from coastal winds. It’s well suited to relaxed exploration and photography.
March
Early spring brings milder air, highs around 11–14°C. Blossoms appear in parks and the Sea Garden begins to green. Conditions are comfortable for exploring the old town of nearby Sozopol or taking scenic drives along the southern coast before the summer season begins.
April
Mild and brighter, with highs of 15–18°C. The beaches are still quiet but inviting for long walks. Wetlands around Burgas are lively with birdlife, making this one of the best months for nature enthusiasts. Outdoor cafés reopen, and the town regains energy.
May
Warm and increasingly sunny, highs of 20–23°C. Early-season beach visits become realistic, and the Black Sea coastline is at its most relaxed. Boat trips, cycling routes and visits to nearby Pomorie or Nessebar are rewarding before peak summer crowds.
June
Early summer brings highs around 24–27°C. Sea temperatures begin to rise, and beaches steadily fill. Long daylight hours suit coastal walks, open-air concerts and evening dining along the promenade. The lakes remain active with birdlife.
July
Hot and sunny, with highs of 28–31°C. This is peak beach season, with swimming, sailing and water sports in full swing. Early mornings and late afternoons are best for sightseeing, while evenings bring a lively atmosphere along the waterfront.
August
Similar warmth to July, often 29–32°C. The sea is at its warmest, and beach life dominates the rhythm of the town. Cultural festivals and outdoor performances add variety beyond the shoreline. Day trips south along the coast remain popular.
September
Temperatures ease to 23–26°C, with calmer conditions and fewer visitors. The sea retains warmth, making it an excellent month for swimming and coastal walks. Light softens across the bay, and local food and wine events appear as harvest begins inland.
October
Cooler, with highs around 17–20°C. Beaches empty, and the focus shifts to nature reserves, city parks and cultural attractions. It’s a pleasant time for exploring the region’s archaeological sites and coastal villages without summer bustle.
November
Chillier and more changeable, highs of 12–15°C. Autumn storms occasionally sweep in from the Black Sea, creating dramatic coastal scenes. The town is quieter, offering a slower pace for museum visits and relaxed dining.
December
Winter returns with highs around 7–10°C. Clear, cold days bring sharp sea views, while festive decorations brighten the town centre. It’s a calm period for reflective coastal walks and enjoying local cuisine away from the summer crowds.
