Madeira

The Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira is a slice of paradise, with its diverse flora creating a gorgeous landscape of rainbow colours that gives rise to its nickname, ‘the Floating Garden’. The capital city of Funchal also provides an explosion of colour, with historic churches, colonial-era buildings and relaxed city squares. The winding backstreets of Funchal are also packed with quaint Portuguese eateries and wineries where you can sample the local cuisine, whilst the modern marina provides upscale cafes and seafood options for an alternative dining experience.

Madeira’s coastline is also a joy to behold, with craggy rocks and pebbled beaches providing a visual delight for visitors. Although the island isn’t gifted with natural golden sands, the man-made Calheta beach and the volcanic Ribeira Brava provide welcome space for beach-lovers to soak up some sun.

Elsewhere on the island, Canico de Baixo offers an 18th century church as one of its star attractions and provides an upscale choice for those seeking luxury with its boutique hotels and villas boasting stunning coastal views.
