When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Cool, dry, and sunny, with temperatures around 25–30°C in most regions. It’s an excellent time for exploring Bangkok’s temples, Chiang Mai’s markets, and the beaches of Phuket and Krabi. Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal for temple visits, cycling, or coastal strolls.

February

Warm and dry, 26–31°C, with clear skies. Island escapes and southern beaches are particularly inviting, while cultural attractions across the country are easily explored without the intense heat of later months. It’s also a good time for trekking in northern highlands before the humidity rises.

March

Temperatures climb to 28–34°C, and humidity begins to increase. Coastal and island destinations remain appealing, with calm seas for snorkelling and diving. Cities can feel warmer, making morning markets, river cruises, and temple tours the most comfortable times for activity.

April

Hot, 30–36°C, and humid, particularly inland. Songkran (Thai New Year) brings lively street celebrations and water festivities, especially in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Early mornings and late afternoons are best for sightseeing, while beach resorts and coastal escapes offer relief from the heat.

May

The rainy season begins in parts of the country, especially the west coast and northern regions, with temperatures around 28–33°C. Showers are often brief but heavy, leaving lush landscapes and waterfalls in full flow. Coastal islands can remain relatively dry, particularly in the east, making them attractive for water-based activities.

June

Warm, humid, and increasingly rainy, 28–32°C. Inland trekking is still possible, though afternoon showers become more frequent. Southern islands in the Gulf of Thailand, such as Koh Samui, experience lighter rainfall and sunny interludes, ideal for beach and snorkelling excursions.

July

Hot and humid, 27–32°C, with regular tropical showers and thunderstorms. The rain typically falls in short bursts, leaving opportunities for outdoor exploration between showers. Coastal waters remain warm, and early mornings are perfect for sightseeing, kayaking, or visiting temples.

August

Similar to July, warm, humid, and rainy. The landscape is vibrant and green, with rivers and waterfalls at their peak. Island hopping is possible, particularly on the east coast, while cultural visits, cooking classes, and indoor attractions provide options during heavy rainfall.

September

Rainfall peaks in many regions, though temperatures remain around 27–32°C. Showers are often intense but brief, leaving mornings and evenings suitable for exploration. Northern highlands remain lush, ideal for photography and visiting hill tribes, while southern islands experience slightly drier periods.

October

Rain begins to taper, with temperatures of 26–31°C. Landscapes are still verdant, rivers are full, and waterfalls impressive. Coastal areas, particularly the east coast and Gulf islands, become more reliably sunny, and city sightseeing is comfortable between occasional showers.

November

Dry season returns across much of the country, with temperatures around 25–30°C. It’s one of the best months to visit: Bangkok and Chiang Mai are comfortable, southern islands are sunny, and rivers are calm for cruises. Early morning and late afternoon are ideal for cultural and outdoor activities.

December

Cool, dry, and pleasant, 24–29°C. Coastal islands are at their peak for swimming, diving, and sailing, while inland cities enjoy comfortable sightseeing weather. Festivals, markets, and cultural events create lively atmospheres, and sunsets along the west coast beaches are spectacular.
