FAM Trip Diaries: New York State
In early June 2025, the New York State Division of Tourism welcomed six guests from leading tour operators and media outlets on a Global Trade and Media FAM trip designed to spotlight one of the state’s most historic milestones—the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal. Hosted by Gemma Webb and Rachael Mathewson of the I LOVE NY UK Office, the six-night itinerary provided a deep dive into the legacy of the canal, whose groundbreaking construction linked the Hudson River to the Great Lakes, transforming trade, travel, and the trajectory of the United States. Dubbed “the USA’s first superhighway,” the Erie Canal played a defining role in establishing New York City as a powerhouse port and fueling westward migration. The group explored the story of the canal through curated experiences in the Finger Lakes and Greater Niagara regions, where summer and fall 2025 celebrations are bringing this pivotal anniversary to life.

New York State FAM Trip Itinerary
Day 1: From Heathrow to Syracuse – A Warm Welcome to the Finger Lakes
The FAM trip began in style as the group of six departed from London Heathrow on a 13:30 British Airways flight, bound for an unforgettable journey through New York State. With a seamless connection in Philadelphia, they continued on to Syracuse Hancock International Airport, the gateway to the scenic Finger Lakes region.
Touching down in the early evening, it was just a short 10-minute transfer to their home for the next two nights—Embassy Suites by Hilton Syracuse Destiny USA. After a long day of travel, the group kept things relaxed with a casual bite to eat at the hotel’s inviting restaurant and bar before turning in for the night.
“I loved my stay at Embassy Suites Destiny in Syracuse, the rooms are huge with a separate lounge area and a huge bathroom. The bed is probably one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in. The floor to ceiling windows are lovely and a great viewing point” – Alice Penwill, Travel Reporter, The Sun
“An excellent location if you need some retail therapy, just across the road from the huge Destiny USA shopping mall. The staff throughout the hotel were very helpful and friendly and assisted with complimentary toiletries and lent me a phone charger when my luggage hadn’t arrived yet from the flight in. The One Bedroom Suites are huge with comfortable beds, a separate living room and a kitchenette” – Matthew Thompson, AmeriCan & Worldwide Travel
Perfectly positioned across the road from Destiny USA—New York State’s largest shopping, dining, and entertainment complex boasting over 250 outlets—the hotel offered a great first impression. Each guest was accommodated in a spacious two-room suite, ideal for both leisure and family travellers, complete with a separate bedroom, living area, and a handy kitchenette featuring a microwave, fridge, and coffee maker.
With the comforts of a suite-style stay and the promise of adventures ahead, the group settled in for a restful night, ready to begin exploring the Erie Canal’s rich heritage the following morning.
Day 2: Exploring Syracuse’s Past, Present and Flavours
After a relaxed breakfast at the hotel, the group set off to discover the charm and history of Downtown Syracuse with a guided walking tour. From the striking architecture of Clinton Square to the characterful corners of Hanover Square, the morning offered a fascinating introduction to the city’s past and present.
The journey into history continued at the Erie Canal Museum, located in the beautifully preserved 1850 Weighlock Building. Through interactive exhibits and original artifacts, the museum brought to life the monumental impact of the Erie Canal—not just on New York State, but on the development of the entire United States. Celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, the canal’s story was the perfect anchor for the day’s itinerary.
Next, the group headed to Salt City Market, one of Syracuse’s most exciting recent additions. Opened in 2020, this vibrant food hall is home to a diverse collection of local vendors representing the city’s rich cultural mix. In a private space, the group enjoyed a buffet lunch featuring generous tastings from several stalls, sampling everything from hearty comfort food to authentic global flavours.
The afternoon was spent exploring some of the Finger Lakes region’s most celebrated local producers. First stop: Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards, a fifth-generation family-run orchard with over 110 years of history. Known for its premium apples and award-winning ciders, the visit offered a taste of both tradition and innovation.
From there, the group continued to Anyela’s Vineyards, beautifully set above Skaneateles Lake. With a focus on sustainable practices and high-quality local produce, the winery provided a relaxed tasting experience in a truly picturesque setting.
“There are more than 250 wineries in the gorgeous Finger Lakes region. We visited the delightful Anyela’s Vineyard. It overlooks Lake Skaneateles, a lovely spot where Charles Dickens and Bill Clinton have holidayed (not together). The combination of the wine and the Vista is quite intoxicating” – James Rampton, The Sunday Post
To round off the afternoon, the group boarded a Mid-Lakes Navigation cruise on Skaneateles Lake. Run by a family who have carried on the legacy of delivering mail by boat for over half a century, this peaceful cruise offered postcard-perfect views and a refreshing new perspective on the region.
After returning to the hotel to freshen up, the evening concluded with a special dinner and short tour of the historic Marriott Syracuse Downtown, formerly the Hotel Syracuse. Lovingly restored to its 1924 grandeur, the property blended timeless elegance with modern comfort, making it a fitting venue to close a day full of discovery and local pride.
Day 3: High-Speed Thrills and Playful Discoveries
After breakfast and check-out, the group left Syracuse behind and headed south toward one of the Finger Lakes region’s most adrenaline-fuelled attractions: Watkins Glen International Raceway. Affectionately known as “The Glen,” this legendary track has hosted some of the biggest names in motorsport since the 1940s and remains one of NASCAR’s most iconic road courses. The highlight? A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the group to experience the thrill of the track from inside one of the race cars—a heart-pounding moment that left everyone buzzing.
“We had an unexpectedly good time whizzing round this NASCAR track. We were treated to a white-knuckle ride around the 3.4 mile circuit in a pace car piloted by a highly skilled pro racing driver called Chris. High-speed fun of the highest order” – James Rampton, The Sunday Post
Lunch followed at the atmospheric Seneca Lodge Tavern, a place where racing history hangs—quite literally—on the walls and ceilings. From NASCAR tires to laurel wreaths and even arrows left behind by championship archers, the décor tells stories of Watkins Glen’s sporting legacy. Over local fare and casual conversation, the group soaked up the character of this longtime favourite haunt of drivers and racing crews.
In the afternoon, the group journeyed north to Rochester, arriving at The Strong National Museum of Play—a vibrant, interactive space dedicated to toys, games, and all things play. With two sprawling floors of hands-on exhibits and the world’s largest collection of toys, dolls, and board games, the museum delighted with both nostalgia and innovation. Whether rediscovering old favourites or exploring the evolution of play, it was an experience that brought out the inner child in everyone.
“I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed The Strong Museum of Play. At first, the idea of visiting a toy museum didn’t sound all that exciting. But it turned out to be one of the most fun and engaging attractions I visited during my New York trip. From the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated every exhibit offered something exciting and immersive. One of the highlights was the video game room, where I got to try out a wide range of games, some familiar, others completely new to me, it was great fun! My personal favourite, though, was the Barbie exhibit. Seeing the dolls displayed from across the decades and spotting a few I had as a child. The museum is incredibly rich in content, and you could easily spend an entire day exploring everything it has to offer” – Abigail Mayhew, Trips Beyond
“This was the biggest surprise – it really has something that everyone, from any generation can enjoy or appreciate. I could have spent the whole day reliving the toys and computer games from my childhood” – Matthew Thompson, AmeriCan & Worldwide
“Rochester’s impressive Strong Museum of Play brought back many happy childhood memories of mine and my son while bringing us right up to date to the electronic games era of my granddaughter” – Mary Moore Mason, Essentially America
A short transfer led to check-in at the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa, nestled in the rolling hills just outside Rochester. With sweeping views and a serene setting, it was the perfect place to unwind after a packed day.
Dinner that evening was hosted at Black Button Distilling, a craft distillery known for its locally sourced, small-batch spirits. With catering by Partyman Catering, the meal combined inventive dishes with expertly crafted drinks, all served in a stylish industrial-chic setting. It was a fitting close to a day filled with speed, nostalgia, and bold flavours.

The morning began with a leisurely breakfast at the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa, offering guests time to relax and enjoy the property’s serene surroundings before another day of exploration.
“The rooms at the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa were spacious and thoughtfully equipped. I especially appreciated the small kitchenette perfect for making a morning coffee and keeping snacks and drinks fresh in the fridge. After a full day of exploring Rochester, the comfortable bed made for a restful and much-needed night’s sleep. First stop was the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, the world’s oldest photography museum and a treasure trove for lovers of visual storytelling. Housed in the magnificent Colonial Revival mansion once owned by George Eastman—the visionary founder of Kodak—the museum features a remarkable collection of over 400,000 photographs, including the world’s largest collection of daguerreotypes outside France. The group wandered through elegantly restored rooms, contemporary galleries, and blooming historic gardens, gaining insight into the man who helped make photography accessible to all.
From there, it was time to experience the Erie Canal firsthand with a lunch cruise aboard the Sam Patch, a charming replica of a 19th-century packet boat. Departing from the picturesque Port of Pittsford, the cruise gently meandered westward to Lock 32, offering an immersive look at the engineering marvels of the canal system. Passing through the lock itself provided one of the most authentic and memorable moments of the trip so far.
In the afternoon, the group travelled to Lockport, home to the historic Flight of Five Locks, a unique structure that allows boats to climb the Niagara Escarpment. A guided tour brought the canal’s history to life through storytelling, impressive original engineering, and life-size bronze sculptures of 19th-century lock tenders. The Locks District Museum added further depth to the experience, with exhibits that honoured the ingenuity and labour behind this mighty waterway.
“Unexpected was the powerful story of the creation of the Erie Canal told by the stone cascade of the five locks in Lockport, plus its group of seated statues representing the canal workers” – Mary Moore Mason, Essentially America
Next, a refreshing beer tasting at The Lock Tender gave everyone a chance to unwind. This inviting taproom, located right on the Erie Canal, featured 10 taps and a fine selection of local beverages. With its relaxed vibe and nods to Lockport’s canal heritage, it offered a well-earned pause before dinner.
“The Lock Tender provided a casual opportunity to mix with locals and taste local beers and wines. Very informative and friendly staff” – Jane Wilson, The Travel Magazine & The Arbuturian
Evening dining took place at Big Ditch Brewing Company, where hearty fare and craft brews were served in a lively setting—an ideal way to reflect on the day’s rich mix of culture, history, and flavour.
“The star of the show was the salad which had strawberries and feta sprinkled over the top – a summer flare that I’m now making a staple at home” – Alice Penwill, Travel Reporter, The Sun
The group arrived at the Cambria Hotel Niagara Falls just in time for one final treat: the Niagara Falls Illumination. Watching the world-famous falls bathed in colour under the night sky was nothing short of magical—a spectacular end to an unforgettable day on the road.
“My first visit to Niagara Falls and it didn’t disappoint! I hadn’t realised there were various experiences such as Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds. And then the night Illumination. A memorable part of the itinerary and made more enjoyable by having a representative with us to guide us to the best viewing areas, at the right times” – Jane Wilson, The Travel Magazine & The Arbuturian
Day 5: From Roaring Falls to Artistic Heights in Buffalo
After breakfast and check-out from the Cambria Hotel Niagara Falls, the group set out for a thrilling morning aboard the iconic Maid of the Mist. As North America’s oldest tourist attraction, this legendary boat ride delivered a rush of excitement, bringing everyone face-to-face with the raw power of the falls. The spray, the roar, the energy—it was a wake-up call like no other.
“My best experience has to be the Maid of the Mist. The boat takes you right up to Niagara Falls and to stand right at the front of the boat to feel the spray of the water, it was an amazing feeling. Definitely what I would call a once in a lifetime experience” – Alice Penwill, Travel Reporter, The Sun
“The highlight of my trip was the attractions at Niagara Falls. Starting the day with the Maid of the Mist was both refreshing and exhilarating! I was genuinely impressed by how effective the ponchos were at keeping us dry. Getting up close to all three waterfalls with the awe-inspiring Horseshoe Falls as the finale truly showcased the power and beauty of Niagara Falls. The boat ride itself was thrilling, especially as we edged closer into the mist of the falls” – Abigail Mayhew, Trips Beyond
Next came a visit to the sleek and environmentally forward Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center and the adjacent Niagara Falls State Park Education Center. With immersive exhibits and thoughtful design throughout, it offered a deeper appreciation of the area’s natural and cultural significance.
Then, the adventure continued with the Cave of the Winds experience, where poncho-clad visitors made their way to the Hurricane Deck, just a few feet from Bridal Veil Falls. The force of the water and the sensation of being surrounded by it was nothing short of electrifying. The “World Changed Here” Pavilion offered compelling historical context about the area’s impact on the early conservation movement.
“Niagara Falls are spectacular and my favourite experience was the Cave of the Winds where you get to walk through platforms right of the foot of the American Falls – while getting soaking wet and listening to the deafening sound of the Falls, from here you really appreciate the incredible power and volume of water pouring over the falls” – Matthew Thompson, AmeriCan & Worldwide
“The Cave of the Winds was unforgettable experience. The interactive exhibit explaining how Niagara Falls became a State Park was both informative and engaging, and I really enjoyed the way it was presented. Walking on the boardwalk to Bridalveil Falls took my breath away it’s hard to imagine another place that lets you get so close to such a natural wonder. The Hurricane Deck was especially exhilarating, offering a real taste of the falls’ incredible force” – Abigail Mayhew, Trips Beyond

With roots going back to 1862, it remains a leading voice in modern and contemporary art.
The afternoon continued with a guided tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House, a Prairie-style architectural masterpiece tucked into Buffalo’s Parkside neighbourhood. Originally designed for businessman Darwin D. Martin, the estate now stands as a stunning example of Wright’s “organic architecture,” seamlessly blending structure with nature.
Later, the group checked in at the Courtyard by Marriott Buffalo Downtown / Canalside, a stylish base set in the heart of the city.
Dinner was served high above it all at Tappo, where a family-style Italian feast was enjoyed on the rooftop terrace. With the skyline aglow and conversation flowing, it was a perfect way to wind down another rich day of discovery—with one more still to come.
“Relaxed surroundings, excellent pasta dishes and I highly recommend the garlic cheese bread. The rooftop bar and terrace is a particular highlight with a great atmosphere on a summer’s evening” – Matthew Thompson, AmeriCan & Worldwide
Day 6 & 7: Buffalo’s Waterfront, Heritage and Farewell Moments to New York State
The final full day of the fam trip began with breakfast at the hotel before setting out on a peaceful canal-side walking tour to reflect on Buffalo’s legacy of service and innovation.
The first stop was Vietnam Memorial Park, part of the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park’s Monuments Garden, which honours generations of U.S. Armed Forces members. The setting, framed by tranquil waters and poignant memorials, offered a moment of quiet reflection.
Next, the group visited the Waterway of Change Exhibit, an interactive installation highlighting Buffalo’s evolving relationship with its waterways, before heading to the nearby Seneca Chief — a full-scale replica of the Erie Canal boat that famously opened the canal in 1825. Built by a dedicated team of volunteers at the Buffalo Maritime Center, the boat stands ready to embark on its own bicentennial voyage in September 2025, retracing Governor DeWitt Clinton’s historic journey.
The morning continued at the Buffalo Lighthouse, a rugged 19th-century beacon that once guarded the city’s growing harbor. Standing tall at the edge of Lake Erie, it offered insight into Buffalo’s maritime resilience through centuries of storms and expansion.
A delicious lunch followed at Duende Cantina in the artistic enclave of Silo City, where creative repurposing of Buffalo’s industrial past sets the tone for forward-thinking spaces filled with art, music, and flavour.
By late afternoon, the group headed to Buffalo RiverWorks, the city’s vibrant waterfront playground. From ziplining and climbing the historic grain silos to relaxing with a drink beside the river, there was time to unwind, explore, and soak up the buzz of this unique venue.
Just a short walk away, the Buffalo Heritage Carousel offered a nostalgic ride powered by renewable energy. This lovingly restored, solar-powered carousel combined whimsy with sustainability, celebrating Buffalo’s role in both past innovation and a greener future.
To cap off the day, the group boarded the Spirit of Buffalo for a 90-minute sunset sail. As the city skyline glowed and twilight settled over the lake, there was a shared sense of both celebration and gratitude. It was a peaceful and fitting end to an unforgettable journey through New York State.
“I was very surprised at the opportunity to sail on Lake Erie aboard the Spirit of Buffalo, sailing on a classic 73-foot topsail schooner with its red sails blowing in the breeze. My first visit to Buffalo and I appreciated the variety of things to do and see in the area” – Jane Wilson, The Travel Magazine & The Arbuturian
After breakfast on day 7, participants made their way to Buffalo Niagara International Airport, bringing the fam trip to a close as they departed for London—leaving with memories as vivid and varied as the landscapes they explored.
