FAM Trip Diaries: VIVA ENJOY With VIVA Cruises

In August 2025, VIVA Cruises welcomed a select group of UK travel agents on its first dedicated FAM trip from the UK, offering them the chance to experience the brand’s contemporary take on European river cruising first-hand. Hosted by Michelle Daniels, Country Manager for the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, the seven-night voyage aboard VIVA ENJOY departed from Amsterdam and was split into two sectors—allowing more agents to discover VIVA’s signature style of relaxed luxury and All-Inclusive value. The first group travelled via Eurostar from London St Pancras International to join the ship in Amsterdam, sailing through Utrecht and Ghent before disembarking in Brussels. The second group embarked in Brussels and cruised to Antwerp and Dordrecht, returning to Amsterdam—each sector providing a taste of the cultural charm, culinary flair, and effortless comfort that define the VIVA Cruises experience.

VIVA ENJOY FAM Trip Itinerary

Day 1: From London to Amsterdam – All Aboard VIVA ENJOY

The group departed London St Pancras International aboard the Eurostar, travelling at high speed beneath the Channel and across northern Europe to reach Amsterdam Centraal in under four hours. On arrival, they transferred to the sleek VIVA ENJOY, their home for the next few days. Once settled into their comfortable cabins, guests gathered in the ship’s elegant Panorama Lounge for welcome drinks with host Michelle Daniels, where they were introduced to VIVA Cruises’ All-Inclusive concept and relaxed approach to river cruising. The evening concluded with a group dinner in MOMENTS restaurant, where regional specialities and international dishes set the tone for the culinary journey ahead.

Being docked, walking distance from Amsterdam Centraal Station was a perfect base to explore the city. I’ve been many times, but customers from VIVA Cruises have the perfect spot to reach the city centre by foot or jump on a tram to Museumplein (park and garden), or just explore the different areas of Amsterdam” – Kayleigh, Travel Counsellors

Day 2: Amsterdam to Utrecht – Canals, Culture and Café Charm

The morning began with a leisurely cruise along the scenic waterways leading out of Amsterdam, giving guests time to unwind and take in the views from the Panorama Lounge or Sun Deck as VIVA ENJOY made her way towards Utrecht. Arriving around 11:30am, the group disembarked to explore one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most atmospheric cities. With its historic canals lined by café terraces and distinctive wharf cellars, Utrecht combines medieval charm with a youthful energy thanks to its large student population. Guests enjoyed free time to wander at their own pace or joined one of VIVA Cruises’ optional shore excursions—perhaps a guided city walk to the striking Dom Tower, a visit to the Museum Speelklok with its collection of self-playing instruments, or simply a relaxing coffee beside the Oudegracht canal before returning to the ship for the evening cruise.

We only spent about an hour in Utrecht centre as we were docked a little further away so jumped in an Uber. From what we saw, it was a gorgeous town with quaint little streets, riverside cafes and shops, and an impressive shopping mall” – Ranjiv, Veenus

Day 3: Cruising the Rhine – Medieval Treasures in Ghent

Guests enjoyed a slow start to the day as VIVA ENJOY made her way towards Belgium, tracing scenic stretches of the Rhine en route to Ghent. After a leisurely morning on board, the ship arrived around midday in one of the country’s most captivating cities—Ghent—where the rivers Lys and Scheldt meet amid a skyline of spires and gables.

A guided four-hour excursion introduced the group to the city’s remarkable blend of history, culture, and contemporary spirit. After a short transfer by coach to the historic centre, guests began a walking tour through Ghent’s cobbled streets, framed by grand guildhalls and waterways that once powered one of medieval Europe’s most prosperous trading hubs. The skyline—dominated by the iconic trio of Saint Nicholas’ Church, the Belfry, and Saint Bavo Cathedral—provided a striking backdrop for stories of the city’s golden age, when the grain and wool trades brought immense wealth and helped inspire a flourishing of Flemish art.

Today, Ghent is as lively as it is historic. The group experienced the city’s youthful energy first-hand, passing vibrant squares filled with students, cyclists, and canalside cafés. There was free time to browse independent boutiques or sample Belgian chocolate in the shadow of centuries-old façades. For those with an interest in art and history, an optional highlight was a visit to Saint Bavo Cathedral to view The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, the world-famous altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers—widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of Northern Renaissance art.

As the afternoon drew to a close, guests returned to VIVA ENJOY to relax before dinner, reflecting on a day that perfectly captured VIVA Cruises’ philosophy of blending cultural exploration with comfort and ease.

“The tour of Ghent was extremely thorough, the guide was so knowledgeable and really got across the history of everything we’d seen. It was lovely to be sat in the cathedral and have the making and history of the Ghent Alterpiece explained. I don’t think I’ve ever been in such a beautiful cathedral. Also, the boat trip at the end is the perfect way to see the city from a different viewpoint” – Kayleigh, Travel Counsellors

Day 4: Brussels – Changing Faces In The Capital Of Europe

The morning marked a smooth transition between groups as VIVA ENJOY arrived in Brussels, the cosmopolitan heart of Belgium and unofficial capital of the European Union. After breakfast, the first group of agents bid farewell to the ship and their hosts, disembarking by 9:30am after a memorable few days discovering the character and culture of the Netherlands and Flanders.

Meanwhile, a new set of UK travel professionals were already on their way, travelling from London St Pancras International aboard the Eurostar. Crossing the Channel in under two hours, the journey offered a swift and comfortable connection to the Belgian capital—an ideal demonstration of how seamlessly VIVA Cruises itineraries can link with European rail travel.

Upon arrival at Brussels Midi station, the second group transferred to VIVA ENJOY to begin their own exploration of the Rhine waterways. Once settled into their cabins, they gathered in the ship’s light-filled Panorama Lounge for welcome drinks with host Michelle Daniels, sharing first impressions of the ship and learning more about VIVA’s modern, all-inclusive river cruise concept.

As evening fell, the group enjoyed a convivial dinner in MOMENTS restaurant, where the atmosphere was as warm as the hospitality. Menus paired international favourites with Belgian-inspired touches—perhaps mussels in white wine, Flemish beef stew, or waffles with a twist—setting the scene for the voyage ahead.

Beyond the ship, Brussels itself offered an enticing backdrop. Famed for its ornate Grand Place, rich Art Nouveau architecture, and world-class chocolate and beer, the city has long been a crossroads of European culture and commerce. Its elegant boulevards and hidden courtyards reveal a blend of French flair and Flemish charm, while a thriving dining scene and contemporary arts culture give this historic capital a distinctly modern energy.

Dinner in the VIVA Bistro was sooooo good!” – Grant, Albatross

Day 5: Antwerp – A Sweet Stroll Through Chocolate History

VIVA ENJOY arrived in Antwerp, the vibrant port city renowned for its diamond trade, historic architecture, and thriving culinary scene. Guests disembarked to enjoy a guided 2.5-hour chocolate tour, exploring one of Belgium’s most beloved culinary traditions. The walk offered a fascinating insight into the history of chocolate, tracing its journey from a prized currency among the Maya and Aztecs to a 16th-century European remedy and a luxurious indulgence in royal courts.

The tour also delved into the story of the praline, invented in Belgium in 1912 and still crafted by hand in specialised chocolatiers today. Guests had the opportunity to taste these iconic treats, discovering how chocolate has evolved from a medicinal novelty to a symbol of love and enjoyment, celebrated both locally and worldwide. Alongside indulgent samples, the walk highlighted chocolate’s surprising benefits for mood and well-being, adding a playful yet educational twist to the experience.

Beyond the sweet discoveries, Antwerp itself captivated visitors with its historic streets, striking Gothic and Baroque architecture, and bustling squares. The blend of medieval charm and modern energy, combined with its rich cultural heritage, made the city an ideal backdrop for a morning of exploration and indulgence. By the end of the tour, guests returned to VIVA ENJOY, ready to continue their journey along Belgium’s scenic waterways, with a newfound appreciation for one of the nation’s most famous exports.

“It was lovely to have (a cabin with) the French balcony” – Michelle, The River Cruise Company

“A fabulous gem of a city, with beautiful architecture, amazing heritage and unique boutique shops! Be sure to discover the hidden courtyards and medieval streets hidden behind Vlaeykensgan. Grote Markt is also a must to see with it’s 16th century guildhalls and gothic cathedral” – Grant, Albatross

Day 6: Dordrecht – A Labyrinth Of Canals And Heritage

VIVA ENJOY arrived in Dordrecht, one of the Netherlands’ oldest cities, famed for its intricate network of canals, historic buildings, and charming squares. Guests had the morning and early afternoon at leisure to explore independently or to join one of VIVA Cruises’ curated shore excursions, taking advantage of the city’s compact layout and picturesque streets.

Dordrecht offers a unique glimpse into Dutch history, with over a thousand monuments and buildings that span centuries, from medieval churches to elegant merchant houses. Strolling through the city, visitors could admire the impressive façades along the canals, discover quiet courtyards tucked behind bustling streets, and soak in the atmosphere of a city that once played a pivotal role in trade and shipping.

Among the highlights for those wishing to explore on foot is the iconic Grote Kerk, a striking Gothic church that dominates the skyline. Its tower provides panoramic views over Dordrecht and the surrounding waterways, giving a sense of the city’s historic importance as a river port. Beyond architecture, the city offers numerous cafés and boutique shops, perfect for sampling local treats or picking up a unique souvenir before returning to the comfort of the ship to continue the journey along the Dutch waterways.

“Best discovered on foot – with its network of canals you could be mistaken for thinking you were in Venice. It is so small you can hardly get lost, and it is the perfect place to find historic buildings, tiny squares and over a thousand monuments! Be sure to visit the Grote Kerk – climb the 275 steps to the top for perfect views all around!” – Grant, Albatross

Day 7: Returning To Amsterdam – Canals, Culture, And Contemporary Charm

VIVA ENJOY returned to Amsterdam, offering guests a final opportunity to explore the Dutch capital at their own pace or join a shore excursion. The city’s iconic canals, lined with narrow, gabled houses, provide a striking backdrop for a morning stroll or bike ride. Visitors could wander through historic squares, browse boutique shops, or enjoy a coffee at a canal-side café, soaking up the relaxed energy of this cosmopolitan city. Art and culture enthusiasts had the chance to visit world-class museums, while those seeking local flavour could sample Dutch specialties such as stroopwafels or cheese in vibrant markets. Amsterdam’s blend of history, innovation, and lively atmosphere ensured a memorable finale to the VIVA Cruises experience.

There is so much more to Amsterdam than meets the eye and beyond the red lights and space cakes is a city bursting with culture and heritage. A 20-minute walk from Central Station is the Hortus Botanicus (Botanic Gardens), an oasis of calm in this bustling city it is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Home to over 6,000 different indigenous and non-native trees and plants. In addition to a gorgeous cafe, outdoor gardens, and a ‘hothouse’ that emulates three different tropical environments, hundreds of majestic butterflies can be inside the Botanicus’ Butterfly Greenhouse. Another ‘must-see’ is the famous ‘Bloemenmarkt’ – dating back to 1862 this floating flower market is the perfect place to pick up flowers, tulips, and a wide range of souvenirs – it is also the perfect place to snap “one for the ‘gram” – Grant, Albatross

Day 8: Amsterdam – Farewell To The Canals

The final day of the voyage saw VIVA ENJOY dock in Amsterdam for disembarkation. After breakfast, guests checked out by 9:30am, marking the conclusion of their seven-night river cruise adventure. The central location of the ship made it easy for guests to explore the historic heart of Amsterdam one last time before their onward journeys, leaving with a deeper appreciation for the city and the immersive VIVA Cruises experience.

From start to finish, my first river cruise with VIVA Cruises was incredible. The team were welcoming, the ship offered amazing dining choices, and the watercolour painting class was such a fun extra. Sailing right in to the heart of the cities like Amsterdam and Brussels made exploring so easy. I’ll definitely be sharing my experience with others and I can’t wait to go on another” – Steve, CLIA
